Clean out and Organize Your Closet

I have spent several long months aggravated with my clothes closet. This past weekend I had the hubby go through the entire thing with me and I feel much better about the whole thing!

If your closet is a disaster like mine was then take stock of what you have going on in there before you start tearing it apart. The best thing I ever did was put the money out on a closet organizer. I could only afford to get one for one wall in my closet but even just one made a huge difference. I will be eventually getting more to finish out our closet and the other closets in our home. I was able to put triple the amount of items in one space with the closet organizer than I could before I got it.

While the closet organizer was a huge help (I got the Rubbermaid closet organizer and love it!) we still had problem because my husband has way too many clothes. You heard me right, not me, my husband! This weekend we went through all of our clothes and came away with 8 trash bags full of clothes we no longer wear or can fit into or are fit to be worn. We cut our closet space in half which is very exciting and makes me want to get a new closet organizer as quick as possible so I can really make it look nice!

You should clean and organize your closet if it doesn’t feel good to you as it will feel so much better when everything fits! A closet organizer may seem like an expensive splurge but they are completely a time saver and stress reliever when you go searching for that one special shirt.

But what to do with all those clothes?

A large portion we are donating and if I wanted to take the time and effort I could have taken them to a resale shop as well.

A portion is actually going to be thrown away or made into cleaning rags as they were worn way past their prime.

Some have been put into a pile to be mended. To be honest, I’m not sure how long until they will actually be mended but that is a whole other post!

Some were put into my fabric pile as they will make great fabric to add to a quilt or other sewing project. My mom once made a blue jean quilt with a whole bunch of leftover jeans instead of throwing them out.

Some were given to friends or family who would need or want some extra clothes.

What do you do with your clothes when you go through your closet?
