Everytime I hear someone say that they cannot eat healthy because it costs too much I want to sit them down and explain how much cheaper it actually is to eat healthy.
Junk food is probably the most expensive and unhealthy of all foods you can purchase at the grocery store. The healthiest, and probably most unrealistic option, would be to cut out junk food completely. Since many of us cannot do without some kind of treat, at least occasionally, then the better option is to make your treats from scratch.
There are many types of junk food you can make at home to save money. Cookies and cakes are easy. Cakes can often be made into cupcakes instead of a large cake. You can then freeze the individual portions of cupcake and only thaw what you need.
Trail mix is very costly but not as much if you make it yourself! Purchase bulk nuts and dehydrate your own fruit to add to the trail mix.
Beef jerky is also a treat that can be made at home for much less than you would spend in the store! Plus, you get to try out different flavors just by dehydrating different meats with different seasonings.
Many dips, even hummus, can be easily made from home and you can make homemade potato chips or cut up vegetables to go with them.
There are so many treats you can make at home which also means you control the amount you make and what ingredients you use to make these treats healthier for you and your family.

What frugal treats do you make for your family?

It’s always nice to save some money!
What I usually do is plan my meals ahead and then go grocery shopping. For example, I decide to prepare chilli, spaghetti, meatballs and such for the following week, then buy everything I need and ONLY cook what I planned.
That way, I’m not only saving money – I’m saving some time, too. It’s actually a great win-win situation.
It is also a good idea to make the most of any buy one get one free offers and utilise online voucher codes for your grocery shopping. You can stock up on any healthy ingredients whilst saving money.
I agree, junk food does cost more than healthy food. I think people just find it easier and more convenient though.
